DAG HAMMARSKJÖLD MEDAL AWARDS

Indian Police Officer Jitender Kumar, an Indian peacekeeper, is among the 119 military, police and civilian personnel who will be honoured this year with Dag Hammarskjöld Medal a prestigious UN medal for courage and sacrifice in the line of duty.

About: 

  • What is it? A posthumous award to members of peacekeeping operations who have lost their life as a result of service in peacekeeping operations of the United Nations. 

  • History: It was established in 1997 by Security Council (through a resolution) on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of peacekeeping). In 1998, the first Medal was presented to the family of Dag Hammarskjöld. 

  • Named after: The medal is named after Dag Hammarskjöld, the second Secretary-General of the United Nations, who died in a plane crash in 1961 while en route to cease-fire negotiations during the Congo Crisis.
