European Union (EU) leaders have struck a deal to put women in two of the most important policymaking jobs in the EU for the first time.

About: 

  • European Commission Chief: German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen has been nominated as the first woman to become the European Commission Chief.

  • European Central Bank chief: Chief of International Monetary Fund (IMF) Christine Lagarde has been nominated as the first woman to head the European Central Bank.

  • European Council President: Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel is nominated as European Council President.

  • Foreign Policy Chief: Spain's Foreign Minister Josep Borrell is proposed as Foreign Policy Chief.

  • President of the European Parliament: David-Maria Sassoli has been nominated as President of the European Parliament.

  • Most of the roles must be ratified by Parliament.
