May 20, 2019

The first Indian voter, Shyam Saran Negi, 101, cast his vote at Kinnaur district’s Kalpa polling booth under Mandi Lok Sabha seat.

About:

  • Shyam Saran Negi, born in Kalpa, Himachal Pradesh, is a retired schoolteacher who cast the first vote in the 1951 general election in Chini constituency, later renamed Kinnaur— the Independent nation's first election.

  • Although the majority of the election took place in February 1952, residents of Himachal Pradesh were given the chance to vote five months early because of the probability that heavy snowfall would make it impossible for citizens to reach the polling stations.

  • Negi has voted in every general election since 1951, and is believed to be India's oldest voter as well its first.

  • He is a role model for the younger generation, as he keeps on exhorting them to vote and elect good leaders. He was even appointed a brand ambassador by the state election commission.
