Senior US Treasury official David Malpass has been selected as the 13th President of the World Bank for a five-year term.

David Malpass: 

  • David Malpass, the undersecretary of the Treasury for international affairs, has served on the boards of the Council of the Americas, Economic Club of New York, and the National Committee on US-China Relations. 

  • He is controversial owing to his views on multilateralism, multilateral organisations including the World Bank. He has been an advocate of a smaller, more focused World Bank, arguing that countries can raise capital in private markets. 

  • He has also been critical of China’s Belt & Road Initiative (BRI) as well as China being the largest customer of the Bank.
