The Government of India announced his appointment on 6 October 2026.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He will assume charge as the <\/span><b>29th Chief of the Air Staff<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in the rank of Air Chief Marshal from the afternoon of 31 October 2026,<\/span><b> succeeding Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, who will retire on the same day.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2><b>Who is Air Chief Marshal Ashutosh Dixit?<\/b><\/h2>\r\n<p><b>Air Chief Marshal Ashutosh Dixit<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is a<\/span><b> veteran fighter pilot<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> who has served in several key operational, training and command positions in the Indian Air Force. With more than four decades of service, he <\/span><b>currently serves as the Vice Chief of the Air Staff.<\/b><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He was <\/span><b>commissioned into the fighter stream of the Indian Air Force on December 6, 1986.<\/b><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Over his career, he has flown more than <\/span><b>3,500 hours<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on aircraft including the <\/span><b>Mirage-2000, MiG variants, Kiran, Jaguar, IL-78, Hawk and <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/lca-tejas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tejas<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He is an <\/span><b>Experimental Test Pilot<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> as well as a <\/span><b>Qualified Flying Instructor<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">His operational experience includes participation in <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/operation-safed-sagar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Operation Safed Sagar<\/a>, Operation Rakshak and <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/operation-sindoor-india\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Operation Sindoor<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He has commanded a <\/span><b>frontline fighter air base in the Western Sector<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and a <\/span><b>premier fighter training base in the Southern Sector<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He has also held senior positions including <\/span><b>Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Central Air Command<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and assignments at <\/span><b>Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">His career has involved responsibilities related to <\/span><b>flying operations, training, operational planning and higher defence management<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He has also been associated with the IAF's focus on <\/span><b>unmanned systems and emerging military technologies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, including the first <\/span><b>IAF Dronathon-2026<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> held at the Pokhran Field Firing Range.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">His military honours include the <\/span><b>Vayu Sena Medal, Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and Param Vishisht Seva Medal.<\/b><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2><b>What is the Chief of the Air Staff?<\/b><\/h2>\r\n<p><b>The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is the <\/span><b>professional head of the Indian Air Force (IAF<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) and is responsible for the overall command and administration of the force.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The CAS oversees the operational preparedness, training, organisation and modernisation of the IAF and plays an important role in defence planning and national security.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The CAS holds the<\/span><b> rank of Air Chief Marshal, a four-star rank,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and serves as the principal military adviser to the Government of India on matters related to the Indian Air Force.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Chief of the Air Staff is <\/span><b>appointed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/cabinet-and-cabinet-committees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Appointments Committee of the Cabinet
