About: 

  • Bhupen Hazarika (1926 – 2011), widely known as Sudhakantha was a musician and film-maker from Assam who is credited with introducing the culture and folk music of Assam and Northeast India at the national level. 

  • His songs, written and sung mainly in the Assamese language by himself, are based on the themes of humanity, communal hamony, universal justice and empathy. 

  • He was the Chairman of the Sangeet Natak Akademi from 1998 to 2003. 

  • He also directed many movies in Assamese Language. 

  • Awards: 
    • Dadasaheb Phalke Award (1992). 

    • Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1987), Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship (2008). 

    • Padma Shri (1977), Padma Bhushan (2001), Padma Vibhushan (2012) and Bharat Ratna (2019, posthumous).
