Bhupen Hazarika (1926 – 2011), widely known as Sudhakantha was a musician and film-maker from Assam who is credited with introducing the culture and folk music of Assam and Northeast India at the national level.
His songs, written and sung mainly in the Assamese language by himself, are based on the themes of humanity, communal hamony, universal justice and empathy.
He was the Chairman of the Sangeet Natak Akademi from 1998 to 2003.
He also directed many movies in Assamese Language.

Dadasaheb Phalke Award (1992).
