Why in News? The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is likely to issue a Blue Corner notice against MP Prajwal Revanna who fled to Germany on a diplomatic passport.

What are Colour-coded Notices? They are notices issued to all Interpol member countries by Interpol’s General Secretariat at the request of a member country’s Interpol National Central Bureau requesting “to share worldwide alerts and information on wanted persons-to tackle internationally spread-out criminal activities.”

Types-

  1. Red Notice: To seek location and arrest of convicted persons wanted for prosecution or to serve a sentence.
  2. Yellow Notice: To help locate/identify missing persons (often minors)or ones unable to identify themselves.
  3. Blue Notice: Issued prior to or immediately after the filing of criminal charges to collect information about a person’s identity, location or activities in relation to a criminal investigation.
  4. Black Notice: To seek information on unidentified bodies.
  5. Green Notice: To provide warning about a person’s criminal activities, where the person is a possible threat to public safety.
  6. Orange Notice: To warn of an event, a person, an object or a process representing a serious and imminent threat to public safety.
  7. Purple Notice: To seek or provide information on modus operandi, objects, devices and concealment methods used by criminals.

What will a Blue Corner Notice Mean for Prajwal? At this point of time, the notice will simply take further CBI’s enquiries as it wants to know the whereabouts of Prajwal in Germany. But as all Interpol’s notices are completely discretionary i.e. Interpol itself cannot compel law enforcement authorities to act on a particular notice, it will depend on Germany if its law enforcement agencies cooperate with CBI to resolve the case.
