Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN):
- Status: it is a not-for-profit, non-government organization. It is not a part of United Nations System.
- Functions: It is responsible for Internet Protocol (IP) address space allocation, protocol parameter assignment, domain name system (DNS) management etc.
- Supporting organizations: ICANN has three Supporting Organizations to recommend policies:
- Address Supporting Organization (ASO),
- Country Code Names Supporting Organization (ccNSO) and
- Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO).
- Country Code Names Supporting Organisation (ccNSO):Established in:
- HQ: Los Angeles (California, United States).
- Functions: ccNSO is responsible for developing policies related to country code top-level domains (ccTLDs).
- ccNSO Council:
- It administers the affairs of the ccNSO.
- It has 18 members of which 15 are elected (three from each of the five geographic regions) and 3 are appointed on the basis of nominations.
Ajay Data:
- Ajay Data (from Rajasthan) is Founder & CEO of Data XGen Plus (Email and enterprise solutions provider) and a leader in email linguistic services.
- As a ccNSO council member:
- He has been elected for 2-year term (starting from October 2018).
- He will represent the Asia, Australia and Pacific Islands region.
- It is a significant development for India as it has numerous languages which are required to be brought on to Internet for mass adoption of broadband services.
