DEMOCRACY INDEX 2018

April 24, 2019

When there are charges of violations of the model code of conduct (MCC) against all the main leaders of all the leading parties in the ongoing election campaigning, it is not surprising then that The Economist had kept India in the category of Flawed Democracy in the Democracy Index 2018.

About:

  • Name of report: “Democracy Index 2018: Me too? Political participation, protest and Democracy.”

  • Published by: The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).

  • History: This is the 11th edition of the Democracy Index, which began in 2006.

  • Objective: To provide a snapshot of the state of democracy worldwide for 165 independent states and two territories.

  • Categories: The Democracy Index is based on five categories – electoral process and pluralism; civil liberties; the functioning of government; political participation; and political culture.

  • Types of regime: Based on its scores on a range of indicators within these categories, each country is then itself classified as one of four types of regime – “full democracy”, “flawed democracy”, “hybrid regime” and “authoritarian regime”.
