- The ELISA is an immunological assay (analytical procedure) commonly used to measure antibodies, antigens, proteins and glycoproteins in biological samples.
- Some examples include diagnosis of HIV infection, pregnancy tests ETC.
Glanders:
- Glanders is a fatal infectious disease of equines including horses, donkeys and mules.
- The disease is caused by a bacterium known as Burkholderia mallei and has zoonotic potential. The organism is also considered as potential bio-weapon and categorized under ‘Tier 1 Select Agent’.
- Signs of glanders include the formation of nodular lesions in the lungs and ulceration of the mucous membranes in the upper respiratory tract.
Equine infectious anaemia (EIA) is a chronic and persistent infectious disease of equines caused by a retrovirus.Equine infectious anaemia (EIA):
- EIA is also known as swamp fever.
- Symptoms include high fever, anemia (due to the breakdown of red blood cells), weakness, swelling of the lower abdomen and legs. The horse may die suddenly.
- It is a World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) notifiable disease.
