Former U.S. President George H.W. Bush passed away at the age of 94, making him the longest-lived president in American history.

Political Career:

  • George Herbert Walker Bush (1924 – 2018) was an American politician. He was a member of the Republican Party.

  • From 1976-77, he served as the director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

  • He served as the 43rd Vice President of the United States from 1981 to 1989.

  • Subsequently, he served as the 41st President of the United States from 1989 to 1993.

  • Post-presidency, he was active in humanitarian activities.

  • Later on, his son, George W. Bush served as the 43rd President of the United States. With this, they became the second father–son pair to serve as U.S. president, following John Adams and John Quincy Adams.

Foreign Policy President:

  • According to political commentators, he is remembered as a Foreign Policy President, as foreign policy drove the Bush presidency.

  • His tenure saw the –
    • Fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and unification of Germany,

    • Collapse of the USSR, post-Cold War relations with Russia, and for signing the START 1 treaty on nuclear weaponry,

    • Military operations were conducted in in Panama which saw arrest and deposing of Panama Dictator Manuel Noriega,

    • Victory over Iraq after the invasion of Kuwait and

    • Signing of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which created a trade bloc consisting of the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Although the agreement was not ratified until after he left office.
