Gibraltar's Supreme Court ruled that a seized Iranian tanker suspected of breaching sanctions by shipping oil to Syria can be detained for 30 more days. Recently, the Grace 1 supertanker was intercepted by British Royal Marines as it was on waters claimed by Gibraltar.

About: 

  • Governance: Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory. 

  • Location: It is located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula. it is bordered to the north by Spain. 

  • Strait of Gibraltar: It is a narrow strait that connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea and separates Gibraltar and Peninsular Spain in Europe from Morocco and Ceuta (Spain) in Africa. 

  • Topography: The landscape of Gibraltar is dominated by the Rock of Gibraltar (made of Jurassic limestone) at the foot of which is a densely populated town area. 

  • History: In 1704, Anglo-Dutch forces captured Gibraltar from Spain during the War of the Spanish Succession on behalf of the Habsburg claim to the Spanish throne. The territory was ceded to Great Britain in perpetuity under the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713.
