India-born Gita Gopinath has joined International Monetary Fund (IMF) as its Chief Economist, becoming the first woman to occupy the top IMF post.

Chief Economist of the IMF:

  • The Economic Counsellor of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is often called the Chief Economist of the IMF

  • The chief economist is also the Director of the Fund's Research Department and is responsible for providing independent advice to the Fund on its policy issues and managing all research done at IMF.

Gita Gopinath:

  • Gita Gopinath, aged 47 is an Indian-American economist. She is the John Zwaanstra professor of International Studies and Economics at Harvard University.

  • She is the 11th chief economist of the IMF. She succeeds Maurice (Maury) Obstfeld as Economic Counsellor and Director of the IMF’s Research Department.

  • She is the second person of Indian origin after Raghuram Rajan, to serve as the chief economist of IMF.
