Presence of Security Forces has increased in the erstwhile cut-off areas of Balimela reservoir in the Malkangiri district after the inauguration of Gurupriya Bridge. This has led to decline of Naxalism activities in the region.

In July 2018, Odisha Chief Minister inaugurated the Gurupriya bridge in Maoist affected Malkangiri district to connect 150 villages again to mainland Odisha.
The villages had got cut off from the mainland in 1972 because of the Balimela reservoir created due to a hydel project. Due to this, villagers had to depend on boats to travel to other parts of the district.
The bridge will help the government’s in its fight against Maoists, as due to extreme remoteness, the region became a safe haven for Maoists.
