The Bill to ban hookah parlours in Maharashtra has received the President’s assent.

About:

  • The Maharashtra government in the budget session of the Assembly amended the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003.

  • Under this, a fine of ₹1 lakh and imprisonment up to three years will be imposed for violations. The offence has been made non-cognisable.

  • The home department will be responsible for the enforcement.

  • The move to ban hookah parlours gained momentum after the fire at Kamala Mills in December 2017, which claimed 14 lives.

  • After Gujarat, Maharashtra will be the second State to implement the ban.
