INDIAN INSTITUTES OF SCIENCE EDUCATION & RESEARCH (IISERs)

The Union Cabinet has approved establishment and operationalisation of permanent campuses of the two new Indian Institutes of Science Education & Research (IISERs) at Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh) and Berhampur (Odisha).

Background:

  • Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (SAC-PM) under the Chairmanship of C.N.R. Rao, recommended creation of new institutes devoted to science education & research named “Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research” broadly on the lines of IISc. Bangalore.

  • The IISERs will provide top quality basic science education at the Under-Graduate and Post-Graduate levels, PHDs & Integrated PHDs.

  • These institutions have been declared by an Act of Parliament as Institutes of National Importance.

  • The institutes were created by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), under The National Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Bill, 2010 (an amendment of the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007).

List of Institutes:

  • Seven IISERs have been established across the country at Bhopal, Berhampur, Mohali, Pune, Kolkata, Thiruvananthapuram and Tirupati.

  • IISER, Tirupati was established in 2015 and IISER, Berhampur was established in 2016. These institutes are presently functioning from transit campuses.
