In Sri Lanka, President Maithripala Sirisena has removed Ranil Wickremsinghe from the post of Prime Minister and sworn-in former President Mahinda Rajapaksa in his place.
About:
The sudden political developments came when President’s party decided to leave the unity government headed by Mr. Wickremsinghe.
However, Mr. Wickremsinghe has claimed that he still remains the Prime minister as he has the support of majority in Parliament. He called the development as unconstitutional and illegal.
Background:
President Sirisena’s Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and United National Party (UNP) led by Mr. Wickremsinghe had formed a unity government in August 2015 following the elections.
However, there has been growing tensions between the two sides on several policy matters.
It is noteworthy that in 2015 Presidential polls, Mr. Sirisena contested against then President Mahinda Rajapakse and was victorious.
