In Sri Lanka, President Maithripala Sirisena has removed Ranil Wickremsinghe from the post of Prime Minister and sworn-in former President Mahinda Rajapaksa in his place.

About:

  • The sudden political developments came when President’s party decided to leave the unity government headed by Mr. Wickremsinghe.

  • However, Mr. Wickremsinghe has claimed that he still remains the Prime minister as he has the support of majority in Parliament. He called the development as unconstitutional and illegal.

  • Background:
    • President Sirisena’s Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and United National Party (UNP) led by Mr. Wickremsinghe had formed a unity government in August 2015 following the elections.

    • However, there has been growing tensions between the two sides on several policy matters.

    • It is noteworthy that in 2015 Presidential polls, Mr. Sirisena contested against then President Mahinda Rajapakse and was victorious.
