Lok Sabha passed the National Sports University Bill, 2018 for promotion of sports in the country. The bill seeks to replace an ordinance promulgated in May 2018.
About:
It establishes a National Sports University headquartered at
Mandate of sports university:
To promote sports education in the areas of sports sciences, technology, management and coaching.
To function as the national training centre for select sports disciplines.
It can also establish ‘Outlying Campuses’ throughout the country and also outside India.
It is empowered to grant degrees, diplomas and certificates.
Executive Council:
It will conduct all of the University’s administrative affairs.
It will be composed of (i) the Vice-Chancellor (appointed by the central government), (ii) Additional Secretary and Financial Advisor, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and (iii) four eminent sports persons.
Role the central government: The central government will review and inspect the functioning of the University. Thus opposition parties have argued that it is not an autonomous university.
