NEUROPLASTICITY

Aug. 21, 2018

A study by MIT scientists have shown that by using antidepressant medication fluoxetine, also known as Prozac, they could restore some of the lost Neuroplasticity of the cells.

About:

  • Neuroplasticity – or brain plasticity – is the ability of the brain to modify its connections or re-wire itself.

  • Cause: Neuroplasticity occurs in the brain under two primary conditions:
    1. During normal brain development when the immature brain first begins to process sensory information through adulthood.

    2. As an adaptive mechanism to compensate for lost function and/or to maximize remaining functions in the event of brain injury.

  • Significance:
    • This flexibility plays an incredibly important role in our brain development (or decline) and in shaping our distinct personalities.

    • Without this ability, brain, would be unable to develop from infancy through to adulthood or recover from brain injury.
