Background: U.S.– North Korea Summit
- In June 2018, U.S. President Donald Trump met with North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un, in Singapore, in the first summit meeting between the leaders of two sides.
- Key highlights of summit:
- Signed a joint statement which mentioned “complete denuclearisation” of the Korean Peninsula as a common goal.
- S. announced suspension of joint military exercises with its South Korean in a “freeze for freeze” policy (U.S. freezes the exercises and North Korea freezes its weapons tests).
Summary findings of report by experts monitoring UN sanctions against North Korea:
- Nuclear programme: North Korea has not stopped its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes.
- Violation of Sanctions: It continues to evade UN sanctions through increased illegal ship-to-ship transfers of oil and other products, which generate millions of dollars in revenue for the country.
- Arms supply: North Korea has also attempted to supply weapons to Libya, Yemen and Sudan.
