NORTH KOREA NUCLEAR PROGRAMME

Aug. 5, 2018

Acc. to United Nations Report, North Korea is continuing its nuclear and missile programmes and evading UN sanctions through increased illegal export of oil.

Background: U.S.– North Korea Summit

  • In June 2018, U.S. President Donald Trump met with North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un, in Singapore, in the first summit meeting between the leaders of two sides.

  • Key highlights of summit:
    • Signed a joint statement which mentioned “complete denuclearisation” of the Korean Peninsula as a common goal.

    • S. announced suspension of joint military exercises with its South Korean in a “freeze for freeze” policy (U.S. freezes the exercises and North Korea freezes its weapons tests).

Summary findings of report by experts monitoring UN sanctions against North Korea:

  • Nuclear programme: North Korea has not stopped its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes.

  • Violation of Sanctions: It continues to evade UN sanctions through increased illegal ship-to-ship transfers of oil and other products, which generate millions of dollars in revenue for the country.

  • Arms supply: North Korea has also attempted to supply weapons to Libya, Yemen and Sudan.
