April 12, 2019

In Sudan, the Army removed President Omar al-Bashir from power and detained him. Also, a three-month state of emergency has been put in place.

About:

  • Protests against Omar al-Bashir, who has governed Sudan since 1989, have been underway for several months.

  • Mr Bashir is the subject of an international arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC), which accuses him of organising war crimes and crimes against humanity in Sudan's western Darfur region.

  • Now, the Army has suspended Sudan's constitution and has decided to oversee a two-year transitional period followed by elections.
