PHERAN

Dec. 20, 2018

J&K Education Department has withdrawn a ban order barring officials from wearing pheranto the office of Zonal Education Officer (ZEO) in north Kashmir’s Langate in response to a massive online campaign against it.

About:

  • A pheran is a traditional Kashmiri attire worn by men and women. It resembles a long loose coat or cloak.

  • Traditionally it was made from wool or tweed and worn as protection from the winter. However, it is now also stitched from cotton for summer.

  • The attire dates back to around the 15th century, when it was traditionally worn in bright colours. It is now, however, found in nearly all colours.

  • Kashmiris consider it an integral part of their culture and identity.
