Maharashtra govt. has announced committees in each district to minimise economic losses to farmers due to attack by Pink bollworm (PBW) on cotton fibre and bolls.

About:

  • Scientific name: Pectinophora gossypiella.

  • The pink bollworm is an insect known for being a pest in cotton farming.

  • Physical description:
    • The adult is a small, thin, gray moth with fringed wings.

    • The larva is a dull white, caterpillar with eight pairs of legs with pink banding along its back.



  • Range: It is native to Asia, but has become an invasive species in most of the world's cotton-growing regions.

  • Management: Populations of bollworms is generally controlled with insecticides alongwith with mating disruption, chemicals, and releases of sterile males which mate with the females but fail to fertilize their eggs.
