Union HRD Ministry has approved new regulations on plagiarism drafted by the UGC, which prescribes graded punishment for plagiarism.

About:

  • Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) has notified the UGC (Promotion of Academic Integrity and Prevention of Plagiarism in Higher Education Institutions) Regulations, 2018.

  • Objective of new regulations: To eliminate plagiarism in higher education in the country.

  • Salient features:
    • In core area of Research: Any kind of plagiarism is banned.

    • In non-core areas of research: It provides for graded punishment for students and teachers found guilty of plagiarism.

Students will have to submit a revised research paper within 6 months.

Teachers will be asked to withdraw the academic and research papers.

40–60%

Students will be debarred from submitting a revised paper for 1 year.

 

Teachers will be denied the right to one annual increment and right to supervise new masters, M.Phil, PhD students for 2 years.

above 60%

Student’s registration for a programme will be cancelled.

Teacher will be suspended, even dismissed.

 

  • Institutional mechanism: If any member of the academic community suspects plagiarism, he or she shall report it to the Departmental Academic Integrity Panel.
