PRITHVI DEFENCE VEHICLE (PDV)

India successfully conducted a Prithvi interceptor missile test from Abdul Kalam Island in Odisha, achieving a major milestone in developing a two-layer Ballistic Missile Defence system.

About:

  • The Indian Ballistic Missile Defence Programme is an initiative to deploy a defence system to protect from ballistic missile attacks.

  • it is a double-tiered system consisting of two land and sea-based interceptor missiles, namely the Prithvi Air Defence (PAD) missile for high altitude interception, and the Advanced Air Defence (AAD) Missile for lower altitude interception.

  • The two-tiered shield should be able to intercept any incoming missile launched from 5,000 kilometres away.

  • The Prithvi Defence Vehicle mission is for engaging targets at an altitude of above 50 km of the earth’s atmosphere.
