The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) approved indigenous construction of Six Project 75(I) submarines for the Indian Navy at a cost of over Rs. 40,000 crores under strategic partnership model.
About:
Background:
The submarine project called “Project-75 India (P-75I)” was first approved by the defence ministry in 2007 but has been delayed due to politico-bureaucratic apathy.
It will take at least two years for the manufacturer to be down-selected under the SP model. Once the contract is actually inked, it will take another 7-8 years for the first vessel to actually roll out.
Project details:
Under it, six new-generation conventional diesel-electric submarines will be constructed.
They will have advanced Air-independent propulsion (AIP) systems to enable them to stay submerged for longer duration and substantially increase their operational range.
They will have a vertical launch system (VLS) to enable them to carry multiple Brahmos supersonic cruise missiles, making them capable of anti-surface and anti-ship warfare missions.
They will feature advanced stealth capabilities such as a greater ability to suppress noise and acoustic signatures.
Significance:
Construction of six submarines under Project 75(I) will provide a major boost to the existing submarine design and manufacturing eco-system in India through transfer of design and equipment technology as well as necessary skill sets.
The recent approval is the second project under the Defence Ministry’s ambitious Strategic Partnership (SP) model following indigenous production of 111 Naval Utility Helicopters that was approved in August 2018.
