The cyclonic storm, ‘Gaja,’ has ended the dry spell of the Pulicat lake due to which it is attracting migratory birds in large numbers. Due to the prolonged dry spell, the lake did not attract many winged visitors till last month.
Pullicat Lagoon:
The lagoon comprises the following regions:
Pulicat Lake (lies in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh)
Marshy/Wetland Land Region (lies in AP)
Venadu Reserve Forest (lies in AP)
Pernadu Reserve Forest (lies in AP).
Pulicat Lagoon is the second largest brackish water lagoon in India, after Chilika Lake.
About 96% of the lagoon lies in Andhra Pradesh and 3% in Tamil Nadu.
Two rivers which feed the lagoon are the Arani river at the southern tip and the Kalangi River from the northwest.
The Buckingham Canal, a navigation channel, is part of the lagoon on its western side.
Pullicat lake:
Major part of the lake comes under Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh.
The barrier island of Sriharikota separates the lake from the Bay of Bengal and is home to the Satish Dhawan Space Centre.
The lake encompasses the Pulicat Lake Bird Sanctuary.
