Parasaram Pattabhi Kesava Ramacharyulu, 63, is the new Secretary-General of the Rajya Sabha. He is the first insider to rise from the ranks of the Secretariat as its head in about 70 years since it came into being in 1952.

The Secretariat of Rajya Sabha was set up pursuant to the provisions contained in Article 98 of the Constitution which is headed by a Secretary-General.
The Chairman of the Rajya Sabha is assisted by the Secretary-Generalin the discharge of his constitutional and statutory responsibilities.
Secretary-General holds the rank equivalent to the Cabinet Secretary to the Government of India.
