Union Cabinet has approved a Constitution Amendment Bill to provide 10 % reservation for the economically backward section of the general category in jobs and education.

Union Cabinet has approved 10 % reservation in direct recruitments in government jobs and admission to higher educational institutions for the economically backward section in the general category.
Eligibility:
The reservation is for those castes who presently do not avail reservation in any category.
The reservation benefit is likely to be availed by those whose annual income is below eight lakh rupees, people who own less than five acres of Agricultural land and people who own a house measuring less than 1,000 sq. ft.
The Bill will also cover those from the Muslim, Sikh, Christian, Buddhist and other minority communities.
The government is likely to bring a constitutional amendment bill in Parliament soon as the quota will be over and above the existing 50 % reservation to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes (OBC). Articles 15 and 16 of the Constitution will have to be amended for implementation of the decision.
