A team of IIT- Madras have developed RISECREEK, industry-standard microprocessors under Project Shakti, for meeting India’s demand for strategic equipment.
Project Shakti:
Background: Project Shakti was started in 2014 by IIT-Madras. In 2017, Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology funded a part of the project.
Objective: To build 6 variants of processors based on the RISC-V ISA (from University of California, Berkeley).
Application: To meet the demands of defence and strategic equipment such as NAVIC (Indian Regional Navigation Satellite) and Internet of Things (IoT) electronics.
RISECREEK:
The initial batch of 300 chips named RISECREEK are the first of a family of six industry-standard microprocessors to be produced under Project Shakti.
These have been fabricated at Intel’s facility at Oregon, U.S., to run the Linux operating system.
Its design is Open source. Thus these microprocessors can be adapted by others.
