Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina was sworn in as Prime Minister of Bangladesh for the third consecutive term.

About:

  • President Mohammad Abdul Hamid administered the oath of office to 71-year-old Sheikh Hasina at the Bangabhaban in Dhaka.

  • Awami League and its allies secured 288 seats out of elections held for 299-member Parliament recently.

  • It is her fourth term in office.
    • She was first elected prime minister in 1996 but lost the 2001 contest.

    • She returned to power after winning the December 2008 polls by landslide and has been in power ever since.



  • Hasina has presided over record economic growth in the South Asian country of 165 million people but critics have accused her of creeping authoritarianism.
    • To her supporters, she is known as Bangladesh's “mother of humanity” for allowing in hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees fleeing a military crackdown in neighbouring Myanmar in 2017.
