TIMBERLINES

Dec. 23, 2018

According to a study published by scientists in PLOS ONE, Timberlines – The zone of uppermost canopy forests – in Sikkim are unlikely to shift upwards and instead will get denser.

About:

  • Timberlines is the uppermost limit of canopy forests that gradually gives way to the treeline (beyond which trees do not grow).

  • Timberlines are limited by climate: factors including low temperatures and high winds on mountain tops prevent woody tree growth higher up. Timberlines, therefore, serve as indicators of climate change.

  • The recent study in Sikkim suggests that though the timberline is unlikely to shift in Sikkim, it could get denser in the near future. i.e. Sikkim's highest forest zone could get denser.
