Time Person of the Year 2018

Killed and imprisoned journalists - "The Guardians" - have been named 2018's "Person of the Year" by Time.

About:

  • Person of the Year is an annual issue of the United States news magazine Time that features and profiles a person, a group, an idea, or an object that "for better or for worse has done the most to influence the events of the year".

  • The tradition began in 1927.

  • Mahatma Gandhi is the only Indian to be selected as Time Person of year (1930).

2018 person of the year:

  • Killed and imprisoned journalists - "The Guardians" - have been named 2018's "Person of the Year" by Time.

  • The magazine featured four different covers with journalists who have been targeted for their work this year.

  • This includes
    • Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was murdered in October at his country’s Istanbul consulate.

    • Philippine journalist Maria Ressa,

    • Reuters reporters Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo — currently imprisoned in Myanmar — and

    • the staff of the Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Maryland, including five members killed in a June shooting.



  • Time said they were chosen "for taking great risks in pursuit of greater truths, for the imperfect but essential quest for facts, for speaking up and for speaking out".
