US-TALIBAN PEACE DEAL

The US-Taliban Peace deal – for phased withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan – was signed in Doha, capital of Qatar.

About:

  • The landmark peace deal will see a phased withdrawal of thousands of US soldiers from Afghanistan.

  • As part of the deal, the Talibans are required to initiate a dialogue with the Afghan government and other civil society and political groups for a permanent ceasefire and power sharing in post war Afghanistan.

  • US troops are likely to withdraw about 5000 of its soldiers from the current strength of approximate 13000 soldiers. Further withdrawal of troops will depend on the Taliban meeting certain counter-terrorism conditions, compliance that will be assessed by the US.

  • India attended the historic event as “Observer”. India has been an important stakeholder in the peace and reconciliation process in Afghanistan.
