US-TALIBAN PEACE DEAL

The US-Taliban Peace deal – for phased withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan – was signed in Doha, capital of Qatar.

The landmark peace deal will see a phased withdrawal of thousands of US soldiers from Afghanistan.
As part of the deal, the Talibans are required to initiate a dialogue with the Afghan government and other civil society and political groups for a permanent ceasefire and power sharing in post war Afghanistan.
US troops are likely to withdraw about 5000 of its soldiers from the current strength of approximate 13000 soldiers. Further withdrawal of troops will depend on the Taliban meeting certain counter-terrorism conditions, compliance that will be assessed by the US.
India attended the historic event as “Observer”. India has been an important stakeholder in the peace and reconciliation process in Afghanistan.
