WORLD DIABETES DAY

World Diabetes Day was observed on 14 November with the theme “The Family and Diabetes”.

About:

  • Observed on: November 14. It is because the day marks the birth anniversary of scientist and Nobel laureate Frederick Banting who discovered insulin (in 1922).

  • Objective: To create awareness about the effects of diabetes globally.

  • Origin:
    • It was started in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organisation (WHO).

    • The day became an official United Nations Day in 2006.

    • A blue circle logo, adopted in 2007 serves as the global symbol for diabetes.



  • Theme:
    • The theme for World Diabetes Day this year as well as next year is “The Family and Diabetes”.

    • A two-year timeframe has been chosen to best align the World Diabetes Day campaign to the current IDF strategic plan and facilitate planning, development, promotion and participation.
