WORLD FISHERIES DAY 2021

World Fisheries Day was celebrated in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Odisha is the fourth largest fish producing state in India with 8.73 lakh metric tonnes of fish produced during 2020-21 contributing to 2.33 per cent of the state economy.

About:

  • The World Fisheries Day is celebrated on November 21 to recognise the contributions of millions of fisher folks, fish farmers, and people involved with the fishery trade across the globe.

  • The theme of the day is mixture of the fishing industry, nature and environment, and a greater focus on biodiversity.

  • The first World Fisheries Day was celebrated on November 21, 2015.

Several awards  were given  during the event.

  • Balasore, Odisha was awarded as the Best Marine District in the country.

  • Andhra Pradesh was awarded the Best Marine State while Best Inland State Award was given to Telangana. Balaghat in Madhya Pradesh received the Best Inland District award; and Best Hilly and Northeastern State and District awards were taken away by Tripura and Bongaigaon, Assam respectively.
