The National Pension System (NPS) is a defined-contribution, market-linked retirement savings scheme regulated by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA). It enables subscribers to build a retirement corpus through regular contributions and investments in different asset classes. Its key features include portability, flexible investment choices and tax benefits, subject to applicable rules.

What is National Pension System?

The National Pension System (NPS) is a retirement savings scheme that helps individuals build a fund for their retirement.

  • Subscribers contribute money during their working years.
  • The contributions are invested in permitted financial instruments to build a retirement corpus.
  • At exit, subscribers can withdraw the permitted lump-sum amount, while a portion may have to be used to purchase an annuity under applicable rules.
  • NPS is regulated by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) under the PFRDA Act, 2013.
  • It was introduced for Central Government employees joining service on or after 1 January 2004, except the armed forces, and was subsequently extended to other categories.

National Pension System Key Features

National Pension System has several features that help subscribers save for retirement, manage investments and access pension-related services.

1. Eligibility and Coverage

  • Available to eligible individuals under the applicable PFRDA rules.
  • Covers eligible Central Government employees recruited on or after 1 January 2004, except the armed forces.
  • Several State Governments have also adopted NPS for their employees.
  • The All Citizen Model enables eligible individuals to join voluntarily.
  • Corporate-sector participation allows eligible employers to facilitate NPS for their employees.

2. Permanent Retirement Account Number (PRAN)

  • Each subscriber receives a Permanent Retirement Account Number (PRAN).
  • It identifies the subscriber’s NPS account and supports account portability across eligible employment and location changes.

3. Types of Accounts

  • Tier-I: The primary retirement account, subject to prescribed withdrawal and exit conditions.
  • Tier-II: An optional investment account that generally allows more flexible withdrawals, subject to applicable rules.

Annuity under National Pension System

  • An annuity is a financial product that provides regular payments in return for an amount invested with an annuity provider.
  • At exit, eligible subscribers may have to use a prescribed portion of their corpus to purchase an annuity.
  • The amount received depends on the investment, annuity option and rates offered by the provider.
